Lumahai Beach

Lumaha'i Beach on the north coast is the epitome of the picture perfect beach with a crescent of golden sand ringed with greenery. The blue fury that laps its shores, though, is completely different. While Lumaha'i may be a nice place to lounge and drink in the scenery. It is almost never safe to swim in. Backwash, strong currents and pounding waves can easily cause serious injuries. Only the most experienced Hawaiian surfers take this beach on.
On the western end of the beach is the Lumaha'i Stream. This may also be a tempting place to take a dip, but the ocean can easily sweep you right out of the stream. However, there is a small eastern portion of the beach (called Kahalahala Beach) which can be reached on foot over a small lava outcropping. Swimming in this little cove is safer but you should still monitor conditions carefully. Never turn your back on the ocean.

To reach Luamha'i take Highway 560 west from Hanalei toward Ha'ena. A trail runs from the top of the lookout right before mile marker 5 at the eastern edge down to the beach OR take the trail from the parking lot just before the Lumaha'i Stream.
