Kauai Waterfalls

Waterfalls on the island of Kauai are some of the world's best. Below we've included links to several of the best waterfalls on Kauai, most of which you can actually see without a tour or helicopter (all falls visible from the air only are noted). Kauai is the one island we would highly recommend a helicopter tour of though, since so many of it's beautiful waterfalls are tucked away in hidden valleys. And nothing can surpass the experience of a helicopter flight into Wai`ale`ale Crater and viewing its "weeping wall." The sight is breathtaking - you can't even count all the waterfalls.

On the list of Kauai waterfalls below, we've included the height of the falls when possible, a rank (out of 5 stars), noted if it's a seasonal falls (dry in summer or too heavy of a flow in winter), and included any additional access information as necessary. If you think you've located a Kauai waterfall we've mistakenly left off this list, by all means please contact us and we'll make sure it's added. Be sure to also check out all the waterfalls in Hawaii on our Hawaii Waterfalls page.

This little speck of a beach can disappear during high surf. But when the ocean is calm Lawa'i is perfect for swimming, snorkeling and snuba.

This beach really has a lot to offer. Windsurfing, lounging, protected swimming, snorkeling and a lesson in ancient Hawaiian salt production - hence the beach's name. There is a natural salt pond near the beach that is used by descendants of Hawaiians to collect salt. Make sure not to poke around there without permission.

Kekaha is the first portion of the 15-mile long stretch of beach in West Kauai called Polihale Beach. The sand here is comfortable but the water is raucous. Never go in unless it looks very calm. It is a nice spot for experienced surfers and wind surfers. Only occasionally is there a lifeguard on duties. Restrooms are available.

Kalapaki Beach, which fronts the Kauai Marriott, has a smashing view of Nawiliwili Harbor and the Hoary Head Mountains. This beach is busy with visitors and locals enjoying the great sand and swimming. It is also a popular canoes and catamarans that will sometimes come ashore. You will also find opportunities for surf lessons and kayak trips here. There is a picnic area and facilities near the Anchor Cove Shopping Center.

Kealia Beach is known for its wicked waves and you'll see plenty of boogie boarders and surfers there on a good day. Summer is the best time to try to swim at Kealia. If the ocean doesn't seem inviting the 150-foot wide, .5 mile long beach is good for sunbathing or a stroll.

This two-mile stretch of sand backing the Wailua Golf Course near Kapa'a is rarely crowded. Swimming is generally good but currents and surf have to be monitored. This is a nice spot to get a spot all to yourself. There is no lifeguard and the only facilities are at the southern end of the beach.

In the summer you can have a picnic underneath the Ironwood trees and in the winter you can catch a good wave at Kalihiwai Beach in north Kauai. The swimming is usually good here. Even the kids should be safe, just monitor conditions carefully. Waves tend to be harsher during the winter, there are also a few slippery rocks and some coral you should watch out for.

Lumaha'i Beach on the north coast is the epitome of the picture perfect beach with a crescent of golden sand ringed with greenery. The blue fury that laps its shores, though, is completely different. While Lumaha'i may be a nice place to lounge and drink in the scenery. It is almost never safe to swim in. Backwash, strong currents and pounding waves can easily cause serious injuries. Only the most experienced Hawaiian surfers take this beach on.

Anahola is a nice little curve of white sand circling a bay. The town of Anahola is fairly small so the beach caters to a largely local crowd, although they do not seem to have a problem with visitors. However, it is probably best to go to more touristy beaches on the weekends. Certainly never walk the beach at night when criminal activity is more likely to occur.
