Kauai has some of the finest beaches in all of Hawaii. Some of the best can be found along the north and south shores of the island, especially Ke'e, Ha'ena (on the north) and Po'ipu (along the south) Beaches. If snorkeling is your pleasure, then Tunnels Beach is unsurpassed for that activity. If you'd like to incorporate a nice day hike into a beach visit, then Hanakapiai Beach is just a two mile trek along the Kalalau trail, and the scenery along the way is drop dead gorgeous.

Kalihiwai Beach
Location: North Kauai

In the summer you can have a picnic underneath the Ironwood trees and in the winter you can catch a good wave at Kalihiwai Beach in north Kauai. The swimming is usually good here. Even the kids should be safe, just monitor conditions carefully. Waves tend to be harsher during the winter, there are also a few slippery rocks and some coral you should watch out for. Puu Poa Beach
Location: North Kauai

Pu'u Poa Beach makes you do a little work to earn the privilege of lounging on its sands. You must descend a 191 steps to reach the beach but the journey is well worth it to see the dark green Kauai mountains as the backdrop for the cream colored sands of Pu'u Poa. There is no lifeguard on duty or facilities. Puu Poa Beach

Donkey Beach
Location: East Kauai

This used to be a fairly secluded beach but not so much anymore. In the past, the short hike to the beach ensured some privacy for nude sunbathers. However, since more people are visiting Donkey Beach, there is more enforcement of the anti-nudity laws on Hawaii's beaches. Donkey Beach got its name from the mules which use to haul sugar cane from the plantation nearby. Donkey Beach

Lumahai Beach
Location: North Kauai

Lumaha'i Beach on the north coast is the epitome of the picture perfect beach with a crescent of golden sand ringed with greenery. The blue fury that laps its shores, though, is completely different. While Lumaha'i may be a nice place to lounge and drink in the scenery. It is almost never safe to swim in. Backwash, strong currents and pounding waves can easily cause serious injuries. Only the most experienced Hawaiian surfers take this beach on. Lumahai Beach

Lydgate Beach
Location: East Kauai

This is a nice family beach park with plenty of amenities. Located in Kapa'a, Lydgate offers showers, restrooms, a playground, lifeguards, and a picnic area. Another unique feature are the two rock-enclosed pools (the smaller one is for the kids) which allow for a nice dip without being exposed to the ocean's pull. Lydgate Beach
Pali Ke Kua (Hideaways) Beach
Location: North Kauai

Pali Ke Kua Beach, also called Hideaways, requires a nice 15 minute hike down 120 feet to the ocean. The trail to the beach begins to the right of the Princeville Resort gate house at the end of Ka Haku Road. This path can be a bit tricky. The first part is stairs with a railing and the rest is just trail. If you aren't sure-footed you may want to try another beach, especially if it has been raining. Pali Ke Kua (Hideaways) Beach

Anahola Beach
Location: East Kauai

Anahola is a nice little curve of white sand circling a bay. The town of Anahola is fairly small so the beach caters to a largely local crowd, although they do not seem to have a problem with visitors. However, it is probably best to go to more touristy beaches on the weekends. Certainly never walk the beach at night when criminal activity is more likely to occur. Anahola Beach

Shipwreck Beach
Location: South Kauai

This beach, located in Poipu, got its name from an old wooden ship which sunk off the coast but has long since faded into the deep blue. The swimming at this beach is far from ideal because of strong currents and high surf. One of the beach's main attractions is its proximity to Makawehi Point which is a lithified sand dune. Many fishermen use this spot to get the catch while other locals use it as a diving board (NOT recommended). Shipwreck Beach

Anini Beach
Location: North Kauai

This long stretch of sand is protected by an equally long stretch of reef which makes it one of the most protected beaches on the north coast of Kauai. With 2-miles of sand ahead of you, there is plenty of time for beach combing. 'Anini has great swimming, snorkeling , scuba diving and windsurfing during the summer months as well as showers, restrooms and camping with a permit. Anini Beach

Haena Beach Park
Location: North Kauai

This beautiful, golden sand beach is great for lounge but offers dangerous swimming conditions. Strong currents, rip tides, crushing shore break and a steep drop off shore make a bad mix for a relaxing swim. The surfing can be good, but it's only for the experienced. Haena Beach Park
