Rainbow Falls State Park

One of several falls along the path of the Wailuku River, Rainbow Falls is a gorgeous waterfall to visit early in the morning. Its name originated from the fact that on some early mornings a rainbow can be seen arching across the falls. Waianuenue Falls is its Hawaiian name which means “rainbow seen in water.” Like all waterfalls, Rainbow Falls’ display is dependent on recent rainfall.
It can vacillate between a single thin stream of water and a raging cascade. When the flow is just right, the falls resemble an 80 foot white shower falling over a rock shelf into a placid blue-green pool. From the lookout the surrounding vegetation is a dense jungle. A path to the left of the lookout provides a view from the top of Rainbow Falls. Since this is such a popular tourist spot, it unfortunately is also a thief’s favorite hangout. Do not leave any valuables in your car and be sure to lock it. Restrooms are provided.

Take Waianuenue Ave. from downtown Hilo mauka for approximately two miles. Rainbow Drive branches off to the right just after crossing a bridge. Follow the signs to the parking lot. The park opens at sunrise. and closes at dusk.
Location: Rainbow Falls State Park is located in the Hilo Town Region

Our cruise ship offers a tour of Rainbow Falls in Hawaii. We would prefer to visit it on our own so we are not slaved to a big group. Can we do a tour of the Rainbow Falls on our own? If so, is there a cost for us to do this? There will be 18 of us.

The falls is free to visit and you can definitely head up from downtown Hilo to see it on your own. Be sure to also head up the road to see Pe'epe'e Falls as well.

How far is Rainbow falls and Pe'epe Falls from Hilo.
Do you think it would be too much to visit the Rainbow Falls
and Pe'epe Falls in the morning then the volcano park after
lunch and then drive to Kona to arrive at night time? My
husband and I are 35 years old

Both Rainbow Falls and Pe'epe'e Falls are just outside of Hilo. I think you'd have little problem seeing both the falls and the Volcano area in the same day. It really depends on how much of the park you want to see. Just be sure to start early as the falls parking lots can get crowded after mid-morning. If you make the drive to Kona late, please take the northern route. It's much safer than the southern route, especially if it's starting to get dark.
